In
March 2023 Ecopetrol committed to reduce methane emissions by 45% by 2025 and 55% by 2030.
Since 2019, Ecopetrol has developed methane detection and direct measurement campaigns, using bottom-up and top-down technologies in the different facilities of the organization, in both operated and non-operated assets.
Also, Ecopetrol has a prioritized portfolio of initiatives to reduce methane emissions from leaks and venting in wells and tanks to meet the proposed goals.
Additionally, since 2018, Ecopetrol has acquired voluntary commitments to make significant progress in methane emissions management.

Measuring, monitoring and reporting campaigns
In 2019, the company conducted the first bottom-up campaign dedicated to detecting and measuring fugitive emissions in upstream segment.
In 2021, with technical support from the Canadian government, bottom-up methane measurements of fugitive and venting in tanks and wells were performed at main assets in upstream segment.
In 2021, the first top-down measurement campaign was conducted on 95% of the assets in Colombia. In 2024 deployed bottom-up measurements of tanks venting, wells venting and combustion in prioritized assets and in 2025 performed the first direct measurement to flares combustion and methane destruction efficiency in all the operational flares in the Upstream segment.
In 2023, 2024 and 2025, the company performed top-down measurements on Ecopetrol's operated and some non-operated material assets.
Participation in the top-down measurement campaign (2024) and the bottom-up measurement campaign (2025) as part of the scientific methane measurement study in Colombia, led by the IMEO of United Nations Environment Programme and Carleton University.
Implementation of methane emissions leak identification and closing program (LDAR - Leak Detection and Repair) in line with the national regulation on methane emissions issued by the Ministry of Mines and Energy in 2022.
Annual methane emissions reporting to the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP 2.0), the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC), corporate reporting such as CDP, DJSI, SASB and Integrated Management Reporting under GRI standard. More information here Management and Sustainability Reports®
