Circularity in the supply chain

Strategies design with suppliers which guarantied the Circular Economy implementation has resulted in the following results:

Circular Utilization

Five circularity pilots were developed in the supply chain, including drum reconditioning, pipe spacer plate construction, photovoltaic lighting in storage areas, and the transformation of ferrous and plastic waste. These initiatives were aligned with the circular economy's leveraging categories, encompassing reconditioning, reuse, renewable energy, and recycling. As a result, 22 tons of industrial plastic waste were managed, 600 tons of CO2 equivalent were avoided, USD 415,270 in economic benefits were generated, and 23 jobs were created.

Natural resources Management

Materials and wastes: 34,176,254 kg of waste was recovered, representing an income of $47.6 Billion COP, of which 94% correspond to ferrous waste. This means an increase of 9% compared to 2021.

Of these ferrous waste 173,462 Kg were transformed into 348 racks and 8 cantilever, with a 100% circularity indicator and avoiding $401 million in total costs. Also, 3.5 billion of costs was avoided by selling waste from decommissioning structures. Through the repurchase process of turbo machinery equipment with manufacturers, 1 unit was sold for remanufacturing, obtaining $3 Billion COP and extending its life expand.

In the food service we were able to achieve a circularity indicator of 72%, an increase of 3% compared to 2021, this was accomplished by purchasing green seal products and using the food service waste for composting purposes.

Water: In 2022 Ecopetrol decreased 13,6% of water withdrawal for not industrial facilities.

Decarbonization

76,829 tons of CO2 were reduced in the supply and services chain, of which 56% corresponded to mitigation levers managed with allies. This was accomplished by focusing on energy efficiency, the implementation of low-emission vehicles in the operation and circular initiatives. The remaining 44% corresponded to offsetting emissions through the acquisition of carbon credits by allies, mainly in projects associated with Natural Climate Solutions that provide social co-benefits for the country.

Materials showcase and loans

Platform where materials that are no longer required by Ecopetro are published with free access for Cenit, Hocol, Esenttia, and Ocensa. Actually, there is 31.269 materials in stock.

Buy Back

Model for buying materials in which any material that will be bought needs to have a rebuy offer when it finished its life cycle. This results in minimal waste generation and extra dividends for the company . During 2018-2021 period, buy back incomes were $6.9 mM COP.

Chemical Leasing

On September 15, UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) recognized Ecopetrol as a leading company in the implementation of a model, which consists of moving from purchasing chemical products to buying them as services. This recognition was achieved by presenting the financial and environmental benefits of catalyst contracting strategies at the Cartagena Refinery. Also, the achievements were obtained after the chemical treatment in Cartagena refinery was shown and the Apiay’s operations management were presented.

Wastes reincorporation in the infrastructure field

First contractual model for ferrous waste to be used by a third party as raw material for infrastructure  purposes at Ecopetrol S.A. warehouses.

Green Clauses

27 actual clauses that include environmental criteria for allies’ selection in strategic areas like engineering, O&M and chemical treatments process in the refineries.

Circular initiatives in the feeding area

Food pre-treatment wastes obtained in restaurants were used for composting purposes, vermiculture, analytical production forecast, etc. These initiatives achieve 83% of wastes reuse in the whole operation in Colombia.
