Ecopetrol Group joins the initiative "Sembrar Nos Une" (Sowing unites us) with 6 million trees

Dec 31, 2020

  • 1.8 million have already been planted and an additional 4.2 million are projected before the end of 2022.
  • The plantings are mainly carried out in 12 departments in partnership with environmental authorities, local and regional governments, and communities.
  • Some of the species come from the 7 nurseries that Ecopetrol has close to its operations.

With the aim of contributing to the conservation of the water resource, the protection of ecosystems and to mitigate climate change, the Ecopetrol Group adheres to the initiative “sow unites us”, promoted by the National Government through the planting of 6 million trees by 2022.

Since 2018, the group has planted 1.8 million trees between voluntary and environmental compensation activities. In the last quarter of 2020, 457 thousand individuals will be delivered and sown to complete the million projected in this current period. Over the next two years it will contribute 4 million additional trees to complete the 6 million projected.

"The adherence to this initiative is in addition to the projects developed by the Ecopetrol Group in line with our commitment to contribute to the protection of the country's Biological Diversity, with the purpose of improving the quality of our soils, rivers and the air that all Colombians breathe,” said Felipe Bayón, president of Ecopetrol.

Sowing activities are mainly carried out in the Departments of Bolívar, La Guajira, Huila, Putumayo, Vichada, Meta, Casanare, Cundinamarca, Antioquia, Cesar, Santander and Norte de Santander, in alliance with local and regional governments, as well as with environmental authorities and the support of communities.

During the days, more than 30 native species have been planted, among which the snail, Yellow Flower, Cedar, Guayacan, Guamo and fruit trees stand out.

Some of these trees come from the 7 nurseries that Ecopetrol has near its operations in the south of the country or are the result of the Wildlife agreement with the International Organization Wildlife Conservation Society, which bets on the conservation of national biodiversity through the protection of flora and fauna.

In order to support local green businesses, the Ecopetrol Group also contemplates the purchase of native species from nurseries located in the regions in which it has operations and where the plantations will be made.

The “sow Unites Us” initiative is a campaign led by the Ministry of Environment and sustainable development that aims to green Colombia by planting 180 million trees between 2018 and 2022.
