Greenhouse gas emissions information

GHG emissions information management includes continuous improvement of the GHG inventory, third-party verification, and development of technological tools to optimize data management for greater traceability, transparency, and analysis of information for decision making.

GHG emissions inventory

Ecopetrol's GHG emissions inventory is prepared under ISO 14064-1 and GHG Protocol methodologies, within the organizational boundary “operational control” and with a bottom-up approach. EcopSetrol seeks to maintain its inventory verified in accordance with ISO 14064-3, covering 100% of the emissions generated in Colombia, in the facilities where the company has operational control. In 2024, Ecopetrol is preparing to verify its inventory, in scopes 1, 2 and 3, for the 2021 - 2023 period.

In 2023, the total scope 1 and 2 emissions correspond to 12,927,441 tCO₂e. In addition, the estimated scope 3 emissions correspond to ~153 MtCO₂e. This includes all the categories stablished by GHG Protocol, except for Category 14 - Franchises, considering that Ecopetrol does not have this business type in its operations.

See GHG Emissions Inventory details.

Methane emissions management

In March 2023 Ecopetrol committed to reduce methane emissions by 45% by 2025 and 55% by 2030.

Since 2019, Ecopetrol has developed campaigns for direct measurement of methane emissions and has a fugitive emissions and venting management strategy, which includes:

Monitoring and measurement campaigns

  • Inventory update and adjustment, construction of own emission factors and definition of reduction targets.
  • Incorporation of design criteria and good engineering practices to reduce fugitive emissions and venting.
  • Implementation of the program to identify and close methane emission leaks (LDAR - Leak Detection and Repair).

In line with the commitments made by the company by joining the OGMP 2.0 (Oil and Gas Methane Partnership) initiative and with the national regulation on methane emissions issued by the Ministry of Mines and Energy in 2022, progress has been made in the following activities:

Recognition and achievements

  • Gold Standard OGMP 2.0 reporting (2023).
    • Detection and quantification of fugitive emissions and venting, covering nearly 95% of the company's operations.
    • Update and adjustment of the inventory based on bottom-up field measurements.
  • Closure of + 1,700 leaks.
    • 13,000 tCH4 - ~370,000 tCO₂e (2020-2023).
