Research, development and innovation in the ICP is organized into nine technology areas, four in exploration and production (upstream), one in transportation and logistics (midstream), two in the area of refining and petrochemicals (downstream) and two that address Ecopetrol´s entire production chain (cross-cutting). These are the programs: 

In Exploration and Production: 

1. Foreland basin exploration. Focuses on the development of exploratory concepts and the implementation of technologies that reduce uncertainty in the Ecopetrol Group´s sedimentary basins in Colombia, with emphasis on heavy and extra heavy crude oils. 
2. Offshore petroleum systems. Responsible for the generation of new geological knowledge to define offshore exploratory models and the incorporation of technologies that reduce uncertainty in the Offshore areas. 
3. Technologies for increasing the recovery factor. Focuses on designing and implementing technologies for secondary, improved and tertiary recovery that increase the efficient and sustainable recovery of mobile and residual hydrocarbons, prolonging the economic limit of the reservoirs and generating value for Ecopetrol.
4. Increased productivity of wells. Responsible for designing and implementing technologies to maximize reservoir contact and to improve the productivity of wells, in order to incorporate uncontacted mobile oil and reduce development and production costs for assets of heavy and extra heavy crude oil and shale gas.

Transportation and logistics 

5. Transportation of hydrocarbons. Focuses on creating and adapting technologies for quality and quantity assurance of products in the transportation process to leverage the development of the company´s businesses. 

Refining and petrochemicals: 

6. High conversion refining and petrochemicals. Responsible for creating knowledge, tools and technologies in diesel yield increase, conversion of barrel residues and improving the quality of fuels, which make it possible to improve the refining margin and develop crude oil upgraders.
7. Energy diversification program. Comprises two large areas, biofuels and energy efficiency. In biofuels, it undertakes activities of technological and strategic support to Ecopetrol´s units and its affiliates that are engaged in the ethanol and biodiesel production chain. In energy efficiency, modeling and optimization of the electricity supply chain for the company´s operating units is carried out, and research is conducted on the implementation of solar, wind, geothermal and biomass energy.

Cross-cutting: 

8. Eco-efficiency and asset optimization. Focuses on developing knowledge, tools and technologies to secure the structural condition of the infrastructure, for assessment and mitigation of the environmental impacts of operations, and for automation and control.
9. Analytical Physics and Chemistry Program. Seeks to keep the analytical capabilities of ICP laboratories state-of-the-art, introducing and developing new methodologies to support the research and technological development activities.
