Ecopetrol receives four patents in three countries
Ecopetrol S.A. (BVC: ECOPETROL; NYSE: EC; TSX: ECP) reports that the competent authorities of the United States, Mexico and Colombia have granted it patents for four technological developments that benefit activities related to the production, refining and transportation of hydrocarbons.
The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) patented two technologies in the United States that prevent the destructive action caused by metals known as vanadium compounds during crude oil refining processes.
This is the "Vanadium trap for the catalytic cracking process and its preparation" and "Process for the production of vanadium traps through impregnation and vanadium traps produced by that process."
The Mexican Institute of Intellectual Property (IMPI for its acronym in Spanish) granted a Patent for a technology applied in the strategy against fuel theft, called "Tool for the safe removal of valves installed in fluid pipes."
The three developments patented in these countries already have similar recognition in other nations such as Nigeria, Russia, Mexico, China and Colombia.
Additionally, in Colombia, the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce granted a patent to a process that significantly increases the useful life of the pipes used in the production fields, called: "Process for jacketing metal pipe branches previously jacketed using thermoplastic polymeric pipe".
All the patents are valid for 20 years. In the cases of Mexico and the United States, they are counted from June 5, 2009, and for Colombia, from August 5, 2011.
Ecopetrol has received 12 patents in 2013, reaching a total of 56 recognitions of intellectual property for its technological developments.
