Ecopetrol’s Profile
Ecopetrol is a public stock-holding company in the oil
and gas business, ranked 35 among the 100 main oil
companies in the world and fourth in Latin America,
according to the ranking Top 100 of Petroleum
Intelligence Weekly (PIW).
Ecopetrol operates some 104 oil and gas fields directly
and has a holding in another 163 fields in Colombia
with third parties, through association contracts, thus
being the first hydrocarbon producer in the country.
In addition, it carries out exploration activities in 21
blocks on Colombian territory directly and shares risk
with other companies in another 12.
It has a transportation network of approximately 8,500
kilometers of oil pipelines and multi-purpose pipelines
throughout the country, which converge at the Coveñas and Santa Marta terminals on the Atlantic
Coast, and Buenaventura and Tumaco, on the Pacific.
It has its own research and development center, the
Colombian Petroleum Institute (Instituto Colombiano
del Petróleo - ICP), which provides specialized
technical services through its 24 laboratories and 29
pilot plants.
In refining, it has an installed capacity of over 330 barrels
of crude load per day at the Barrancabermeja (250 kbpd)
and Cartagena (80 kbpd), Refineries, the latter in a
partnership with Glencore. These two refineries satisfy
national fuel production, meeting the country’s demand
and the output of export products. In Colombia, two
additional refineries operate in Apiay and Orito, in the
central and southern region of the country.
